Research · Speculation · Invention

Understand what’s changing.
Build what comes next.

An independent program of research, speculation, and invention. We form conjectures about consequential futures, test the gaps between present capability and future possibility, and pursue them through technology and capital.

Global perspective. Disciplined conjecture. Real consequences.

A short introduction

Westphalian's world model connects values, power, markets and war, and technology. Its method follows a cycle: conjecture, measure, test, build, deploy, and own. Every commitment returns new evidence. Understand what's changing. Build what comes next.

01 / The premise

See the connections.
Understand the consequences.

We are living through a period in which the old categories are failing. Technology is reorganizing economics. Economics is reshaping politics. Politics is colliding with culture, religion, war, and institutional legitimacy. Markets are not merely pricing cash flows; they are pricing narratives, incentives, constraints, and civilizational direction.

Westphalian studies these movements together to decide where to act, what to build, and which possibilities deserve a consequential commitment.

02 / The world model

A world read in context.

Deep conjecture across domains. A change in one part of the world alters the possibilities in another.

01

Law

The rules, rights, obligations, and legal institutions that structure societies and constrain action.

02

Markets

The capital, production, trade, incentives, and prices through which people and firms allocate scarce resources.

03

Technology

The expanding capability layer that transforms what people, firms, states, and institutions can do.

04

Politics

The institutions, factions, alliances, and conflicts through which authority is contested and power is exercised, within and between states.

05

Culture

The moral, religious, artistic, and social traditions that shape meaning, identity, and what societies ultimately serve.

The question is not only what happened. The question is what level of the system moved — and what moves next.

03 / The method

From a view of the world
to a stake in its future.

A working discipline. Every commitment returns new evidence.

01 /

Conjecture

Form a view of what could change — and why it would matter.

02 /

Measure

Locate the threshold between an interesting possibility and a useful capability.

03 /

Test

Seek evidence that could overturn the view. Make uncertainty explicit.

04 /

Build

Experiment with the missing capability. Let the bottleneck determine the tool.

05 /

Deploy

Put promising work into contact with real constraints, users, and markets.

06 /

Own

Pursue durable stakes in what works. Feed the results back into the next conjecture.

Conjecture deeply. Test continuously. Update honestly. Act selectively.

04 / The work

Ideas put to work.

Westphalian is taking shape. Writing and research provide the foundation; experimentation, technology, and ownership define the direction.

Writing & research

Essays and working conjectures on technology, markets, institutions, and civilization. Writing makes ideas precise enough to question.

Experiments & technology

A developing program of measurement, prototypes, and technical experiments: finding what prevents a possibility from becoming practical.

Capital & ownership

The long-term aim: turn earned conviction into selective commitments, useful technology, and enduring ownership.

05 / The founder

An independent perspective.

Alexander Hennessy

Alexander Hennessy

Founder

Alexander Hennessy is the founder of Westphalian, an independent program of research, speculation, and invention concerned with consequential changes in technology, markets, institutions, and civilization. Trained in law and economics, and shaped by work in trading, research, private-market transactions, debt offerings, and public-markets analysis, he brings an investor’s attention to incentives, a lawyer’s attention to structure, and a writer’s concern for meaning.

Westphalian asks a recurring question: where are we, and what is the state of play? Hennessy’s work examines how law, markets, technology, politics, and culture interact — and how movements at one level of the system alter the possibilities at another. That inquiry is the foundation for a developing practice of experimentation, building, and selective commitments of capital.

He lives in Manhattan with his wife and two sons.
